Horse Racing is surrounded by history and tradition with the most prestigious races across the globe tracing their roots back hundreds of years.
In the UK the “classic” race of the Derby, the Oaks, the St Leger, 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas have a long and distinguished past. Similarly the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe in France and the Kentucky Derby in the USA have a history that sets them apart from a multitude of big races across the globe.
With this in mind, it is incredibly difficult for newly established races to break into this hallowed company. However, one race that has managed to do so in a relatively short space of time is the Dubai World Cup.
Whilst some may argue that the huge prize money on offer is the catalyst that his thrust the race into the collective racing consciousness that would be doing the contest a huge disservice.
The race is actually the realisation of a dream held for many years by HH Sheik Mohammed Bin Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and owner of the Darley Stud and Godolphin racing.
The race does offer the richest prize money in the sport of kings but it is much more than that; the race symbolises the passion held in the region for horse racing and the quality of its bloodstock.
The first Dubai World Cup was held at the newly refurbished Nad Al-Sheba racecourse on 27 March 1996 and was an immediate success. The race attracted 11 of the world’s best horses and the initial meeting put the United Arab Emirates firmly on the racing map.
This inaugural race attracted a thirteen-time winner from Australia, a seven-race winner from the UK, the “dirt horse” champion from Japan and Cigar, the North American Horse of the Year. In the end a tight race was won in the final 200 meters by the US super horse Cigar, owned by Allen E. Paulson, and the benchmark for future renewals was set.
The meeting this year will be held at the superb Meydan course on 26 March and millions of people will be waiting in anticipation of another thrilling encounter between the best race horses in the world. The event has a race card of seven meetings and the total prize money is a staggering $24 million. However, the Dubai World Cup is undoubtedly the highlight.

As always the challengers for the race come from around the globe to challenge for the Group One Flat Race that offers a $10 million purse whilst punters will have a keen interest to see how their domestic champions fare against the best horses from other territories.
Whilst religious considerations prevent the local populace from gambling the race is extremely popular with bettors from the four corners of the earth and a living betting market is expected once again in the UK this year.
With this in mind, every story that relates to the race is keenly devoured by racing enthusiasts and reflects in the odds offered in the betting markets.
The latest news that has got punters talking is the prospects of US runner Game On Dude getting a run. Trainer Bob Baffert is keen to see his charge challenge for the race following an impressive victory in the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap but there are just 14 places available and places are by invitation only. Punters are particularly interest given Baffret’s record in the race with two victories to his name, Silver Charm running home a good winner in 1998 and Captain Steve picking up the prize in 2001. Game on Dude is currently 16/1 in the ante post betting markets.
Closer to home professional insiders are getting very excited about the prospects of the Henry Cecil-trained Twice Over.
Cecil has a stunning record in top quality races having trained winners in all of the UK “Classics” but he has suggested that Twice Over may be the best horse that he has trained. This is huge praise for a man of his knowledge and experience but the results achieved by the horse seem to support his argument.
Indeed, Twice Over put in a hugely impressive performance to win the final round of the Maktoum Challenge, a full-scale dress rehearsal for the big race.
The superb six-year-old claimed the $300,000 prize with a dazzling display having started the race as favourite. Despite the best efforts of the well-regarded Mike De Kock-trained Musirinside, the Cecil horse showed a clean pair of heals and returned home by a good length, just ahead of fellow World Cup hopeful Gitano Hernando.
Twice Over is currently the ante post favourite for the race with a best price available of 7/2.
