Philadelphia leads 1-0 after yesterday's victory 11-6 in the first game of playoffs of NL division series. Tonight, given the starting pitcher, Cliff Lee, they expect a 2-0 lead in this series of possible five games. However, the Cardinals announced also good pitcher, Chris Carpenter, who finished regular season in great style. Carpenter is 11-9, with a 3.45 ERA during the season, but within last five starts he went 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA. Carpenter earned only one run in last 24 innings! He has had 5-0 with a 2.38 ERA in his last five starts against the Phillies and it is probably the main reason that he is starter tonight. His main problem tonight will be Utley (.467) and Polanco (.313). While Polanco is in the second or third change, Utley is the second at bat in the first inning, so that he is biggest danger for Carpenter.
Lee is 17-8, with a 2.40 ERA in this season, but has great experience in the playoffs. He has gone 7-2 with a 2.13 ERA during playoff series in the previous two season. He had four career starts against St. Louis and achieved 3-1 with a 1.48 ERA. His nightmare Rafael Furcal (.667) is on day-to-day injury list.
With two pitchers in excellent shape, and their good statistics against tonight's opponent, the first inning in tonight's game should be without winner.
